CRANE FLY
Tipula paludosa

This very common long-legged fly is also known as the Daddy Long Legs. Growiing to about 25mm, they have very fragile legs which often break off. The male has a swollen tip to his abdomen, whereas the female has a pointed tip which she uses to insert her eggs into the soil. The larvae of the Crane Fly are the infamous root eating "leatherjackets".
